Composite

Double-glazed doors and windows, composite materials

The word 'composite' is used to refer to doors and windows that are made up of more than one material.

The latest innovations in our industry for composite are:

For windows mainly, aluminium outdoors for strength and rigidity, and available in a variety of finishes, including colours, with wood on the indoors, for aesthetics and enhanced insulation

For doors mainly, a polystyrene/wood core, with PVC-U outer and inner skins. Although relatively expensive compared to a PVC-U door, this new breed is pretty upper-class, inasmuch as it looks good, is strong and versatile and is exceptionally secure, but expect to put your hand in your pocket that much more deeply

Important:
I am referring to beautiful quality products here, in the region of £1000 for a door and frame, and NOT about some of the 'too cheap' tacky imitations I have been unfortunate enough to set eyes on.

Composite doors:
Composite doors have been moved out rapidly from the industry, this led many fabricators wonder how to take the fullest advantage of this modern market. The two companies, Benchmark Doors Ltd. & Eurocell Profiles Ltd. worked very closely together and developed a unique composite door of 60mm ABS grained-skinned door leaf that looks like a timber door and has high performance associated with its rabated PVC cousin. The door leaf is skilled with many things and is available made to measure in a choice of 16 styles and seven vibrant colors. Eurocell appointed 60 fabricators who were provided with full freedom to create their own suite without the need to invest in new machinery. Each door leaf is individually crafted to meet the customer requirements that ensures minimum handling and optimum performance. The glazing of the door leaf is achieved with an Auto-Plas glazing cassette that allows replacement of the double-glazed unit if required, without having to replace the whole door panel. The Evolution door is also available as a complete door set incorporating the latest in high-performance hardware. Furthermore, Benchmark have recently invested in new door testing equipment in addition to their existing heat and UV resistance test facilities, to ensure that the composite doors are manufactured to the highest standards.

Composite Windows

This picture shows a cross section of a composite window frame. The materials are aluminium on the outside and PVC-U indoors.

This is one of the types of composite available from the AM profiles range.

Another one from the AM profiles stable, this time aluminium on the outside with timber inside. It is a shame that they do not seem to have their own website, but I do have an e-mail address for them:

This picture shows a composite front door. It really looks very much like a wooden door and part of the reason for this is that the mould was originally taken from a very old real wood door, faults and all. The make up of the door is: laminated timber sub-frame, mineral reinforced foam core, and vacuum-formed thermoplastic skins. The outer frame is PVC-U.

See, you don't have to have 'plastic', but expect to pay a lot if you want these as an alternative to PVC-U.
