Conservatories:
GeneralBuying a conservatory, all sorts of conservatories, online quotes, Victorian, Edwardian styles.
Where to start? - OK, here goes.
Professional lead flashing of a double-glazed conservatory roof, easy when you know how. Use an
angle grinder to take out the mortar as shown. Start at the top, and trim the lead down to the next course by cutting out the triangle shape, one at a time. Use a 'blunt instrument' to force the lead into the groove. Rolled-up pieces of lead off-cuts are used as wedges to hold the lead in place. Then re-point, job done! wall.

I
cannot emphasise just how important it is to get the ground and building work right. Get this wrong, and so many do, and you have inherent problems that will never go away. Note the damp-proof course, which should be a minimum of one course above ground, two courses if possible.
If air-bricks in the house wall would be covered over then these should be tubed out to new air-bricks in the conservatory wall. |

This is a really GOOD example of an excellent soak away-design, which I recommend is taken up by all professionals ASAP. Inside information suggests that new Building Regs for conservatories soon will require that rainwater displaced from conservatory roofs should no longer be diverted into main drains, but should be dealt with by soak-ways. This is because it has been the experience of the water authorities that main drainage on most new build estates, as well as existing older drain systems, are unable to cope. Just remember,
you heard it here first!

Next Read this about conservatories:
Conservatories are such a BIG subject in their own right that I am limiting information on my website about them - i.e. I'm leaving all the hard work to others!
| About BalticPine conservatories:
BalticPine have 48 standard models to suit every home and every budget - and can always tailor one to your specification. They are Europe's largest manufacturers of supply-only timber conservatories and every year they provide over 7000 homeowners with the conservatory of their dreams. The ingenious designs of BalticPine conservatories make them easy to assemble, so they can be offered to their customers as ready-to-assemble units (either by modestly proficient do-it-yourselfers, or by a builder). That makes the cost of owning a BalticPine conservatory astonishingly affordable.
Visit the website of Baltic Pine and they will send you FREE brochures. |

A new double-glazed conservatory is the
latest 'must have', right?
This is a scan of an original 1956 magazine cover, and if I am not mistaken I recognise the faces of my friends Barry and Tina D. from when they first started up in the conservatory game (joke)! Nothing much changes really, does it? Home improvement took off in a big way after the war, and this mag. was a pioneer of DIY. Only now do we have the affluence and disposable income to realise our aspirations and have the job done for us with modern materials and knowhow and without having to try and do it on a shoestring as was the case in this 45-year-old photo. |

Roofing
I used to think quite highly of Ultraframe (conservatory roofs) but I have just had papers issued to me as notification that they have made a 'challenge' action against me with the World Intellectual Property Organisation wanting my ownership of a certain conservatory domain name cancelled, without even a phone call or e-mail as a courtesy in advance. Sour grapes, if you ask me. I thought it a little odd when recently their rep. called at my home with a package of promotional stuff and free samples for me.

News: Poorly built double-glazed conservatories may soon become a thing of the past if they lose their present exemption from Building Regulations. The Government has now published a consultation paper called: ‘The Building Act 1984. The Building Regulations 2000. Proposal for amending Schedule 2 - Class VII - Exempt buildings and work, with reference to conservatories, porches, covered ways, covered yards and carports’. This document was issued on 21 December 2001. Responses were requested by 29 March 2002.
