Changing to PVCu?

Question: Around 80% of all original windows have already been replaced, so how does the double-glazing industry survive?

Answer: We get a lot of business from people with 'new' houses wanting better windows, but the big answer is that the replacements of the 1970s and 1980s have now seen better days, the locks are woefully inadequate for these times and the styles (particularly if they are also of the 'battleship-grey' colour) are rapidly going out of fashion.

These pictures show two similar houses, both having their old replacement windows replaced with new PVC-U, and on the same start day. The left-hand house is being done by A.N. Other Company, and the one on the right is being done by us. At this stage we had started to fit the side windows on our job, but I obviously missed the rapid removal of the windows next door!

Before (almost):
I obviously was not quick enough off the mark when I decided that this might make good pictures for my site!
After
The house on the left has new windows by A.N. Other Double-glazing Co., and on the right new windows by The Window Man.

All done, old aluminium double-glazed windows having now been replaced with PVC-U.

The Window Man makes a prediction

This is probably going to surprise many people in the trade, but the evidence is all around us. You may think our market is well into its maturity and it has nowhere else to develop to? Far from it. I believe that the wheel is reinventing itself. Silver aluminium windows are just about to go out of fashion - BIG TIME! White and, to a lesser extent, woodgrained PVC-U, together with the 'many-mullioned look', often with leaded lights, are coming to be the 'in thing'. What this will do to our industry will be almost unprecedented, as people start replacing windows not as a 'need' but as a 'want' and a FASHION item.

The impetus for this change is coming from a new generation of home improvers who aspire to return to the aesthetics of quaintness and aesthetics, and from an older generation who like what the younger generation is doing and have the disposable income to treat themselves to the latest fashion in new windows, just for the fun of it.

A message to the savvy trade: strip out all the old photos in your customer presenter and replace them pronto with pictures of your latest work, because your customers are now buying 'fashion' fixtures.

Example of 'replacing the replacements’ - for FASHION

At last (and not before time) the myth that ‘you only ever fit new windows once ...’ is finally being dispelled completely.
