The 1970s
An understanding of the times:
Gigantic inflation in house prices through
the 1970s was the crucial problem for much of the population.
Although modest Government and local authority support was given to
some first-time buyers, at no time did the number of mortgages
available match the demand. The average manual worker in the
mid-1970s would have had to work only 18 minutes to earn a pint of
beer, whereas in 1950 he would have had to work 34 minutes. Affluent
times indeed!
By the late 1970s DIY had gripped
the nation, and in 1978 over £1 billion pounds was spent on DIY
products, around 50% of households had a telephone and a car, nearly
90% had a 'fridge and over 70% a washing machine, and women were
more likely to have jobs than ever before. People at work enjoyed
longer holiday entitlement and a small decrease in working hours,
which led to more time for DIY, and a third of all families moved
house every five years. This was the decade that saw an explosion of
crude oil prices, and the energy-saving, home-insulation and
double-glazing era was born.
| What a lovely job! I only wish I
had taken a 'before' picture, as this is an utter
transformation! |
